These implants have shown that there were considerable failures with loose and even patients coming in with total implant failure. These can be corrected with follow-up implanting using standard techniques that are more in use by the general practitioner. Their product was so highly publicized that they hailed it as the next big step in dental implant technology without the proper clinical trials. The reason for the failure of their product is that there were not enough specifics in the instruction guides that were included in their Nobel Direct Implant product. They have now revised the said packaging and have initiated an immense re-education of all practitioners through seminars or literature they send to them to avoid future failures and possibly utter failures.

The Direct Implant technology from Nobel is meeting criticism due to a considerable failure rate that has patients with loose implants years after they were first introduced into the market. The arrogance of the company has also been criticized for they began talking only to specialists and not with the general dental practitioners who they have now realized as the life-blood of their business. Direct implants work without the necessity of tissue trimming whereas standard implant technology had successive drilling and tissue moved back to allow proper spacing and growth. The Nobel Implants were screwed into place without the need of excessive operations and left there to accept the abutment and crown successively.

The product was introduces as a no fuss easy alternative to standard dental implants and was hailed to be a breakthrough. The implant itself has a tapered screw shape that allows it to be directly inserted and screwed into place with minimal surgical operations on the site which is to receive the implant. It also needs less drilling steps due to the tapered design which has bone compression ridges that compress bone providing a more stable foundation for the abutment and subsequent crown. The technology has been in place for quite sometime but proper timed clinical studies and reports of problems are starting to trickle in so people will have to wait as they undergo the test of time.
