There are generally two types of dental implants in use today endosteal and subperiosteal implants. Endosteal implants are types of implants that utilize screws or blades that are placed/screwed onto the bone itself to support one or more teeth. Subperiosteal implants is used for people with low bone height which would make endosteal implants impractical. They are also used for people who cannot use regular removable dentures and utilizes a metal frame (usually made of titanium) which is implanted in the gums and is then used to support the ceramic teeth. Both these types have advantages and disadvantages which should be discussed with a dentist for better understanding on which would work best for a certain individual.

Unknown to most, not all of our teeth are of uniform shades. Typically, the molars tend to be darker than the rest, so does the eye teeth. The front teeth are usually the ones which are the whitest as they are the ones to receive maximum attention when it comes to brushing and dental cleaning, They are also the ones which are always exposed to teeth whitening formulas in the market not to mention the front teeth are the ones which are constantly checked. This is of course, due to the fact that they are the face of the biting organs of the human body.

A dental implant is the product of scientific research by dentists and researchers alike that mimics actual tooth in every detail. The only difference, the non-existence of the root, nerves and pulp and other parts that are essential for the function of the natural teeth. The implant itself is made of titanium, an expensive metal that is also used as frames for bridges and medical implants. This is the preferred material for it has the lowest chance of being rejected by the body’s immune system which normally treats it as inert thus does not attack it causing an infection. The implant is also embedded (well screwed in real terms) into the bone of the jaw structure to give it similar strength to natural teeth which is cemented by natural glue to the said bone making it rigid. The base and root are made of high strength ceramic that can withstand the bite force of natural teeth if not more making them strong to last.

Dental procedures like implants are quite expensive in the United States which is why many Americans travel abroad for the said procedure. This so-called Dental Implant Holidays has the patient consulting with doctors/dentists outside of the country where they reside in and travels to that country to have the procedures done. This is now being included in the list of medical tourism categories and is only now undergoing regulation and control by Health organizations. The patient sings up for the procedure and goes on a sort of holiday to the country where the chosen doctor resides in. He then has the initial phases done and goes on a holiday/vacation as the resting/acceptance phase sets in. If all is well and no complications arise, he returns to the dentist to finish the procedure and returns to his home country with a good set of teeth.
The dental implantation procedure is actually a simple one, comprised of only two steps:

1. Pre-operation
The jaw is prepared for in procedure, which involves drilling at the edentulous jaw sites – sites where there is no tooth – for the titanium screw, which is part of the dental implant. The hole, which is very small, must be drilled with great care so as to not damage any nerves in the jaw.
2. Implantation proper.
Just before the implant is screwed into place, the pilot hole is slowly widened so that the dental implant will fit into it better. Once the implant itself has been screwed in place, a protective cover is placed on top of the screw to allow osseointegration – the anchoring of the dental implant to the jaw.
Dentures need something to lay on to provide stability during normal use. Traditionally, good gums and bones allow the dentures to be glued using silicone-based adhesives, providing grip preventing them from falling out as you speak. If the bones and gums have receded so much that they cannot support them properly, then mini-implants are used to provide a form of support and stability.
Mini dental implants are thinner in diameter than traditional implants and can be installed faster requiring less preparatory steps. they also don’t need much healing and uses a profile similar to a ball and socket with the addition of an o-ring to provide the grip, holding the denture to the gums. They are cheaper than traditional implants, failure of which would leave the door open for other, ore viable options.

Previously used only on the top layer of dental implants, ceramic materials are now fast becoming the material of choice for dental implants due to their ability to be easily osseointegrated into the jaw bone. Osseointegration is the process of bone integration wherein the bone tissue grows right onto the medium (previously only titanium) or material from which the implant is made of. Ceramics have the ability to mimic the structure of bone thus allowing growth faster and better than metal implants. Titanium is still the material of choice for it has been used for many years, but ceramics are slowly making their way into mainstream use as they become tougher and better than their counterparts.
Tailor made for each patient using proprietary technology, they are tougher and lighter without the nasty ability of cold weather to have an effect on the feel of your implants. Ask your orthodontists for the option and you may just be a candidate for the latest dental implant technologies around.
